Michael Shamiyeh Architecture & Fashion

(THEORY AND HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE)

The seminar discusses how far architecture is fashion in a figurative as well as in a proverbial way. Considering a few exceptions since modernism architecture is based on the opinion that it isn’t representing a certain style, according to the truth it rather embodies it’s own constructive and material structure. Therefore architecture is subject to a steady progress and keeps distance to stylish trends like it is obvious in the fashion industry. The aim of the present seminar is to show that architecture for sure is fashion that dresses a building according to established academic styles

EDUCATIONAL TARGET Surveying present (design-) attitudes regarding their intentions (ideologies) will be the main task of this seminar. METHOD At the beginning of the seminar we will start with essays treating subjects like fashion theory, questions of style and valuation criteria for taste. The seminar rather is to be understood as place of discussion, where each participant is asked to take part in an active way, than a conventional lecture. Therefore the participation in the seminar is obligatory. Additional literature references will be given regularly. Reading the literature given or respectively the knowledge of it is considered urgent.
